Copper slag is a by-product of the copper extraction process. When copper ore is refined in smelting furnaces, impurities in the ore combine with fluxing agents (like silica or limestone) to form a dense, glass-like material called copper slag.
Such slag is produced in thousand of tonnes everyday by huge copper factories. The physical properties of copper slag are as such that it's very useful in a few industries.
A few uses of copper slag:
Abrasive Blasting Media:Used as a cost-effective and durable alternative to sand in surface cleaning and preparation. Copper slag having hardness of about 6-7 Mohs and the particular shape being sub-angular is very suitable for sand blasting. Copper slag is the most preferred sand blasting media as it is extremely cost effective and gives a very good profile which mostly covers major industrial requirements.
Concrete and Construction:As a partial replacement for sand or fine aggregate in concrete to enhance strength and durability.
Road Construction:As a base or sub-base material due to its strength and stability.
Cement and Brick Manufacturing:Used as a raw material in cement clinker production or as an additive in bricks.
Counterweight : Copper slag having density of 3.5-3.8 gm/cc are perfect for counterweight industry.
